Do You Know What the Main Thing Is?
Summer is here. It seems to have been here for some time. It has been unusually hot and dry for the last two
months, however; this is not going to be a report on global warming. Summer is the time of year that we go on
our vacations and the children go off to a variety of camps. Church attendance usually goes down and people
can become a little lethargic. And because of all of this, it is easy to forget what we are supposed to be doing
and why we are doing it. But it has been said that we must keep the main thing the main thing. It becomes a
problem when we do not remember what the main thing is.
There is a lot going on around here and I am very excited about our future. While I was in prayer the other
morning the Lord reminded me what our main thing is and I’ll remind you:"To produce passionate and committed
disciples of Jesus Christ, through the power of Pentecost." That my friend is the main thing and that is the
official Purpose Statement of the Berea Church of God.
It is so hard for me to not spend a whole lot of time at the building site on Rash Road. It is very exciting to see
the progress being made there. But I have to remind myself what we are building. We are building a barn for the
harvest. It will not only be a barn for the harvest, but it will also be a house of worship to our great God and a
training station for disciples of Jesus Christ. But if we do not remember what the main thing is, the building will
be useless and we would have spent a whole lot of money in vain.
Jesus reminded us that the harvest of lost souls is enormous, Luke 10:2. The numbers are so great, that it is
almost impossible to grasp the shear vastness of the need. We do not have to go to a Third World country to find
lost people. All we need to do is to go to work, or the Mall, or to our children’s sporting events. Lost people are
everywhere. And it is the job of the church to reach as many as we can, before it is too late.
As I am writing this, I-75 is closed going south, because of an accident that took a life. I am sure that the driver of
the U.P.S. truck that perished in the accident believed that his work shift would be like all of the other ones he
had behind him. However, this morning was to be different and change his family for the rest of their lives. That
is how fragile life is. I know that we do not like to think about it, but life is a vapor, James 4:14. A vapor does not
stay around long and that is how the word describes our life, so it is past time for us to get busy in the harvest
field.
I want to take time to complement you on your attitude concerning this building project. I am convinced that you
really care about the harvest. You have given and prayed and worshipped and supported your leadership during
this project. And I fully expect it to continue. I believe that our spirits are connected and God is going to honor
our unity of purpose, Psalm 133.
We are working on several things that will help us accomplish our purpose. I believe that you will be pleased
with our direction. We are going to keep reminding you of what the main thing is. We must remember what our
purpose is. A church that is driven by purpose, is a church that is motivated and growing and that is what we
want to
